What it does

A remote-controlled switch for high-current circuits

A relay lets a small control signal switch a much larger load. It’s an essential building block of a vehicle’s electrical system — driving cooling fans, blower motors, pumps, compressor clutches and lighting without running heavy current through the dash switch or control module.

This Bosch-style unit is a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) relay: energizing the coil moves a common contact between two outputs, so it can switch a circuit on and off or route power between two circuits. It’s rated for a 12V, 40A inductive load and includes a mounting bracket. Mount the relay with the terminals facing down to help prevent water ingress and support long, reliable operation.

Wiring

Terminals & switching

A small trigger current through the coil (85 & 86) switches the high-current contacts: the common terminal (30) moves between the normally-closed output (87a) and the normally-open output (87), sending battery power to your load.

30Common (COM) — fused battery + feed
87Normally open (NO) — switched output to the load (40A)
87aNormally closed (NC) — live when the relay is off
85Coil terminal
86Coil terminal

Terminals 85 and 86 are the coil. On a standard relay without an internal diode, either coil terminal can take the +12V trigger or ground; if your relay has a coil diode, follow its marked polarity. Always confirm the terminal layout against the relay you’re replacing before wiring.

Why it’s a smart replacement

One relay, many circuits

Remote-controlled switching

Uses a small control signal to switch a much larger 12V load on, off, or over — the standard way to drive fans, blowers, pumps, compressor clutches and lighting.

40A capacity

Rated for a 12V, 40A inductive load, so it handles the higher-current accessory circuits found throughout modern vehicles.

Single-pole double-throw

A changeover (SPDT) contact set lets one relay switch a circuit on or route power between two circuits.

Bracket included

Ships with a mounting bracket for a secure, serviceable install.

Wide interchange

Cross-references Bosch, UAC, AC Delco, GM and other common relay numbers — see the table below.

Bosch-style footprint

Built to the familiar Bosch-style form factor used across automotive and equipment wiring.

Questions & answers

FAQ

What does an automotive relay do?
A relay is a remote-controlled switch. A small control current energizes the coil, which closes (or changes over) the heavier contacts — letting a low-current switch or module safely control a high-current circuit such as a fan, blower, pump or clutch.
What is a single-pole double-throw (SPDT) relay?
SPDT means one common contact that switches between two outputs — a “changeover.” It can turn one circuit on and off, or route power from one circuit to another, depending on whether the coil is energized.
How do I wire this 5-pin relay?
Terminal 30 is the common feed from a fused battery positive. 87 is the normally-open output to your load and carries current only when the relay is switched on. 87a is the normally-closed output, live when the relay is off. Terminals 85 and 86 are the coil — apply your switched +12V trigger and ground across them to energize the relay.
What’s the difference between terminal 87 and 87a?
87 is normally open: it connects to 30 only when the coil is energized (your switched-on load). 87a is normally closed: it connects to 30 when the coil is off. A single-pole double-throw relay lets you use either output, or switch a circuit between the two.
Is this relay universal — will it fit my vehicle?
It’s a universal Bosch-style 12V/40A relay that cross-references a wide range of numbers (see the table). Before ordering, confirm your terminal layout and switching type match the relay you’re replacing.
How should I mount it?
Mount the relay with the terminals facing down. This helps prevent water ingress and supports reliable, long-lasting operation.
Not sure it matches?
